After having recorded Classic Opener, I was keen at the time to get something else done, before I inevitably ran out of steam.
The title of this track comes from the opening page of a Black Sabbath biography. It explains that the world in 1967 was in this strange state, particularly in the USA, where you had the hippy movement, summer of love and all that going on; against the backdrop of the war in Vietnam.
The rising major key motif that is present throughout most of this track was what came first, there are versions of this song where it's just that riff in a jolly tempo which was kinda cool but also kinda corny and I felt it didn't really have to scope to go anywhere.
I came back to it with the idea of exploring the meaning of the title a little bit i.e. the notion of peace and love but with the cognitive dissonance of being in a full blown war; and the inevitable clash when these are juxtaposed.
The major motif was slowed down, a minor harmony was introduced and the track started to come together.
The climax of this track was recorded in one take at 3am on a Saturday morning. Even though it was recorded with headphones; my wife was woken by the guitar picking. Insomnia, anxiety, depression and circumstances had combined with the perfect guitar tone to lead to what is a stream of conciousness. I don't know where it came from; but it's still very cathartic to listen to it.
I never completed this track until this week (18 may 2016 actually). I'd always intended my bass playing friend Dan to track bass but I never got round to getting him round. I added my own bassline and added strings and stuff this week too.
There will be another version at a later date with Dan and maybe others.
