First is Paper is inspired by something RM Hubbert said at a gig. He has a song that he plays so that he can be reminded and think about his father in-law.
When I came up with the first bits and pieces for this I was finding myself thinking about my wife, Lynne; particularly when it goes to the major chord part.
In August 2015 I performed this for the first time and gave it the title First Is Paper as our first wedding anniversary was a few weeks later. The gig went terribly. I had a panic attack, ran over time and was generally having a bad evening; but I still managed to zone out while playing this, even with Lynne in the audience, listening.
This version of it is a full layering of those musical ideas and was recorded completely in the weekend 14-15 May 2016. I now have a song that I can listen to in work that I can zone out and think of my life with Lynne. How cool is that?
